Sign in to vote. When the project is said and done It just seems simpler to unhook the server on a weekend, install sql on the new server and when Monday rolls around the workstations see the same dns server with different ip address.
Then when our programs are ran Would it actually be easier to just demote the old server and wait a week or 2 to dcpromo it back? Being complicated is my specialty! That is what I did when I was bringing a new DC online and simply demoting the old and keeping it around as a file server.
I think the timing of when I exchange the ip address and bring the new server online will determine how many hiccups I will have.

It was loosely put, but generally not too bad: Ask users to shutdown all workstations. Remove the old ones and re-enter if needed.
